About the UCAT Exam
UCAT (UK Clinical Aptitude Test) formerly known as UKCAT is an admissions test conducted by UCAT Consortium every year. UCAT is used by medical and dental schools in the UK to test a student's readiness and mental ability to study medicine and dentistry programs leading to clinical careers in healthcare. Currently, 27 out of the 34 medical schools in the UK use the UCAT/ UKCAT score as part of their admissions process.
UCAT is a 120-minute computer-based aptitude test with five timed sections with multiple-choice questions. The UCAT Exam score ranges between 1200 and 3600. Each section is scored on a scale of 300 to 900 and Situational Judgement is scored from Band 1 to Band 4 with Band 1 as the highest-rated and Band 4 as the lowest. A high score enhances the chances of getting admissions in top medical schools such as Manchester, Dundee, Liverpool, and St. Andrews School of Medicine. We at GuideMe provide one of the best UCAT/ UKCAT classes in Dubai designed to achieve high scores.

My mom enrolled me in this class but I was very unsure about online classes but as the classes progressed I came to like them more and more. The teacher helped in so many ways and the class material that we get is very helpful, and the class tests towards the end helped prepare for the UCAT exam and portrayed what kind of questions would be asked, the classes are extremely personalized like there were only 3-4 people other than me in my batch, so we got a lot of individual attention. I'm extremely happy with my experience at Guide Me

I had joined GuideMe during my gap year after reading through their testimonials, reviews and packages they'd offered; I was aspiring to pursue medicine in the UK and felt that GuideMe could really put me in the right direction. Looking back, it was definitely the right decision. The institute has endless amount of quality resources, and staff who you can tell are experienced in this field. The free access to their library and practice tests was great and I definitely used it to my advantage! I want to thank them for providing such great feedback on my personal statement drafts and interview practices. My CV ended up so much better than my first draft, and knowing that it stood out to the admissions office allowed me to focus more on my interview prep. The many interview prep sessions – the MMIs - I had built up my critical thinking skills and ability to think on the spot, which made the actual UK medicine interviews a lot easier to handle. Overall I had a lovely experience with advice and lessons catered to my needs. The guidance I received from their UCAT Admissions team was definitely essential in me getting accepted into a Manchester School of Medicine. Thank you!

I managed to catapult my the UCAT score from 2,460 to 2,940 – leaping from the fourth decile to the top. It was definitely no easy feat going from an average score of 616 to 735. I certainly have GUIDEME to thank for all the help throughout my long-stressful UCAT journey. Learning everything from keyboard shortcuts, figuring out and working on my weaknesses in every section from Abstract Reasoning to Situational Judgement – every bit of analysis helped. What I also realized from so much practice that there comes a time when more practice ≠ higher score. After a while, you get tired of practicing so much – so it’s important to be sustainable and not to burn out. Right amount of practice with the right mentors overlooking every step is a sure-shot success mantra!

What is a good UCAT Score?

Each year, what is considered a ‘good’ UCAT score will vary, depending on the overall performance during that year’s exam. As a general rule, scoring approximately 20 – 30 marks above the average score for each of the cognitive subtests will be a ‘good’ score; however, this changes depending on the calibre of students and therefore the average score as a result.
To give you an idea of the average score, the following are the UCAT ‘mean scores’ till 2023.
Here are the UCAT 2023 Mean Scores for Each section and Total overall.
Section Name | UCAT 2023 Mean Score |
---|---|
Verbal Reasoning | 591 |
Decision Making | 623 |
Quantitative Reasoning | 640 |
Abstract Reasoning | 652 |
Total Score | 2516 |

Q: I have a low UCAT score? Where can I apply?
A: If you have taken your UCAT exam and haven’t scored well, your research needs to be focused on universities that look for candidates with strong academic scores and personal statements. The University of Central Lancashire, for example, does not require UCAT. Contact our Medicine Admissions team for more help on this.

Q: Which universities do not require UCAT?
A: There are a few universities that give more weightage to other aspects of your application - academic scores or personal statement. Cardiff University, Keele, Queens University Belfast are some universities to consider which look at other aspects of your profile.
Q: What is the difference between UKCAT vs UCAT?
A: There is only one difference between the UKCAT and UCAT: there is no ‘K’ in UCAT. That is all.

Q: Can I sit the test more than once?
A: Candidates may only test once in any test cycle. Instances of multiple testing in the same year will be treated as misconduct and all results will be withdrawn. There is no penalty for taking the test again in subsequent years.
Q: Can I reschedule my test to a different date?
A: Yes. Tests can be rescheduled or cancelled without charge as long as you give appropriate notice. The full policy can be found on this page Rescheduling and Cancelling.
Q: Do all candidates see the same test content?
A: Each year several test forms are created, drawn from a large question bank. The test form that a candidate sits is selected at random and within each subtest questions are presented randomly. This ensures that every candidate's test experience is different.
All test forms are equated and balanced to ensure that the scaled scores that candidates receive are equivalent between forms. Questions in the UCAT have been pretested and have passed rigorous data analysis and statistical screening.
Q: What do I need to take with me to the test centre?
A: Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time to complete the check-in process and bring the following:
-
Photographic ID that meets the Photo ID Policy
-
Your appointment confirmation email from Pearson VUE (electronic or printed)
If you miss your appointment for any reason, your test fee will not be refunded. This applies in cases of illness, family emergency, accident, arrest, transport problems and security alert as well as forgetfulness, lateness, and failure to present permitted ID. You will have to pay again to book a new appointment.

Q: Can I sit both the UCAT and UCAT ANZ?
A: Candidates are not permitted to sit both the UCAT and UCAT ANZ in the same year under any circumstances. This is considered candidate misconduct and all results may be withdrawn.
Q: How long is my UCAT score valid for?
A: Your UCAT score is only valid for one year. If you sit the exam in summer 2023, then your score will be valid for 2024 entry to university. If you wish to take a gap year or reapply the next year, you will need to re sit the UCAT and use your latest score.
Q: Can I take the UCAT after Year 12?
A: If you are applying to start a Medicine degree after Year 13, you will need to sit the UCAT in the summer between Years 12 and 13. If you are intending to take a gap year and start your Medicine application after completing your A-Levels, you should sit the UCAT in the summer after Year 13.

Q: What is the difference between the UCAT and the BMAT?
A: The BMAT is used by some medical and/or dental programmes for admission purposes instead of the UCAT.
-
The BMAT contains three sections:
-
Aptitude – measures critical thinking, logic, and reasoning skills
-
Scientific knowledge and applications
-
Writing task
The BMAT is different from the UCAT in that it requires you to have prior knowledge of the sciences and mathematics in order to perform well on the test. The UCAT contains four cognitive subtests (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning) and one non-cognitive subtest (the Situational Judgement Test). Unlike the BMAT, the UCAT assesses your mental abilities without prior subject knowledge. It is designed to measure mental capacity and the personality traits considered important for a career in the medical field. These capacities and traits include logical reasoning and critical thinking skills.
